Pacemakers contain a battery and the battery may not last a lifetime. Thus, pacemaker checks are required to insure that your pacemaker's battery does not need to be replaced. This also helps your physician know that your pacemaker is working in accordance with your heart's electrical activity requirements. During the test, electrodes are placed on the chest.

Ambulatory Monitoring (Holter)

The ambulatory monitor is a valuable diagnostic tool which is used to evaluate the heart rhythm. In the test, a miniature tape recorder (Holter monitor) is connected by electrode wires to five electrocardiogram (ECG) patches on your chest. The monitor is worn for 24 hours while you engage in your normal daily activities. Every beat of your heart is recorded on tape, and after 24 hours, the tape is scanned to detect abnormalities of the heart rhythm.

In an exam room, a technician will apply the Holter monitor to your chest. If necessary, five small areas on your chest will be shaved of hair in preparation for ECG patch placement. The skin will be cleansed with alcohol and lightly rubbed with abrasive paper to ensure a good ECG connection. The electrodes will then be placed on your chest and secured with an adhesive tape. The electrode wires will be connected to the monitor which you will wear under your clothing. The Holter monitor weighs approximately one pound. Hookup time is approximately 15 minutes.

While wearing the monitor, it is important for you to engage in your normal daily activities. You will be asked to keep a diary describing any symptoms that may occur during the recording. You will return the Holter monitor to our office after approximately 24 hours of use. Special arrangements for mailing will be made for persons living at long distances from our office. The tape will then be scanned by a technician and given to the cardiologist for interpretation.

The Holter report is usually available within 48 hours of application of the monitor. The cardiologist or his nurse clinician will call you with the results, and/or arrangements will be made for a follow-up visit to discuss the results and treatment plan.
