The heart adapts to regular physical training and exercise, however you could be at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) if you answer yes to any of these questions:

Chest pain during exercise

Fainting during or after exercise

Unusual breathlessness during exercise
Racing or irregular heartbeat
Has anyone ever told you that you have:    
Heart murmur
Marfan's Syndrome
High blood pressure
Racing or irregular heartbeat
Has anyone in your immediate family experienced premature death (before 50) from:    
Heart failure
Heart Attack
Heart rhythm problems (Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, Long QT Syndrome)
Congenital heart defect

 

What medical conditions place you at risk?

 Healthy appearing athletes may have unknown or hidden heart conditions. Unfortunately, their first and often only symptom is sudden collapse resulting in death. Known medical conditions that could potential result in sudden death when triggered by vigorous exercise include:

  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
  • Coronary Artery Abnormalities
  • Myocarditis
  • Marfan’s Syndrome
  • Long QT Syndrome
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
  • Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplegia
  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy
  • Myxomatous Mitral Valve Degeneration (prolapse)
